Hey everyone, welcome back. I’m Doctor Lisa Lee, and you’re listening to the Reform Spine and Wellness podcast, coming to you from right here in San Diego. Today we’re tackling something I get asked about almost every single week — and honestly, it’s one of my favorite topics. We’re going to talk about what chiropractors actually do. Because there are so many myths floating around out there, and I think a lot of people are missing out on care that could genuinely change their lives — simply because of some misinformation they heard somewhere along the way.
So let’s clear the air.
The biggest myth I hear? That chiropractors just crack your back and send you home. I hear this all the time. And look, I get it. If you’ve never been to a chiropractor, that’s probably what you picture. But here’s the thing — what we actually do is assess and treat the musculoskeletal system. That means your joints, your muscles, your nerves, and how they all work together. Yes, spinal adjustments are a big part of what we do. But we’re also looking at your posture, your movement patterns, your lifestyle, your sleep, your stress levels. We’re trying to understand the whole picture of what’s going on in your body.
Now, the second myth — and this one I really want to address — is that chiropractic care isn’t safe. I understand where the hesitation comes from. Any time someone mentions the spine, people get nervous. That’s completely natural. But chiropractic adjustments are one of the most well-studied forms of conservative care for back and neck pain. They’re gentle, they’re targeted, and your chiropractor is trained to know exactly when and how to apply them. Before I ever adjust a patient, I’m doing a thorough evaluation. I want to know your history, what’s hurting, how long it’s been going on. Safety always comes first. Always.
Here’s another one I love to bust — the idea that once you start seeing a chiropractor, you have to go forever. That is just not true. Some people come in for a specific issue, we work through it together, and they go on their way feeling great. Others find that regular check-ins help them stay at their best — kind of like going to the gym or seeing your dentist. It’s about what works for you and your goals. There is no one-size-fits-all plan here.
So what can you do starting today? First, pay attention to how you feel in your body. Are you waking up stiff? Do you get headaches regularly? Is there tension in your neck or shoulders that just never seems to go away? Those are signals. Your body is talking to you. Second, think about your daily habits — how long you’re sitting, how you’re sleeping, whether you’re moving enough. These things add up over time, and they have a real impact on your spine and your overall comfort.
And if any of that sounds familiar — if you’ve been living with nagging pain or tension and you’ve been putting off doing something about it — I really encourage you to come in for an evaluation. You don’t have to be in crisis mode to see a chiropractor. In fact, the earlier we can catch something and work on it, the better. Whether it’s lower back pain, neck stiffness, headaches, or just that feeling that something is off — that’s worth looking into.
At Reform Spine and Wellness, my whole approach is built around understanding you as a person — not just a set of symptoms. We take the time to listen, to educate, and to build a care plan that actually makes sense for your life here in San Diego.
