In this episode of the Reform Spine & Wellness podcast, Dr. Lisa Ly explores how chiropractic care can help people of all ages reclaim their mobility and move through daily life with greater ease and less pain. Rather than diving into complex clinical jargon, Dr. Ly focuses on the practical, real-world movement challenges that so many people quietly struggle with every day. She breaks down the connection between spinal health, joint function, and overall mobility — and explains how targeted chiropractic treatment can make a meaningful difference. Whether you’re dealing with stiffness, limited range of motion, or nagging discomfort, this episode offers valuable insight into how care at Reform Spine & Wellness can help you get back to feeling like yourself.
Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Lisa Lee, and you’re listening to the Reform Spine and Wellness podcast — coming to you from right here in San Diego. Whether you’re a longtime patient or just stumbling across us for the first time, I’m really glad you’re here.
Today we’re talking about something that affects just about everyone at some point — mobility. And I don’t mean mobility in some complicated clinical sense. I mean the simple stuff. Can you bend down to tie your shoes without wincing? Can you turn your head to check your blind spot when you’re driving? Can you get up off the floor after playing with your kids or your grandkids without needing a minute to recover? That kind of mobility. The everyday kind.
Here’s what I hear a lot in my practice — people come in and they say, “Doctor Lee, I just feel stiff all the time. I’m not in terrible pain, I just… don’t move the way I used to.” And here’s the thing — that feeling is real, it’s really common, and it’s not something you just have to accept as part of getting older or getting busier.
So let me break this down for you.
Your spine is the foundation of nearly every movement your body makes. When the joints in your spine aren’t moving the way they’re designed to — what we call a joint restriction or a subluxation — your whole system starts to compensate. Other muscles have to work harder. Other joints take on load they weren’t built for. Over time, that compensation creates tightness, stiffness, and that general feeling of just being locked up.
Now here’s what’s interesting — chiropractic adjustments work directly on those restricted joints. When we restore proper movement to a joint that’s been stuck, the surrounding muscles can finally relax. The nervous system gets a clearer signal. And patients often notice pretty quickly that they just… move better. They feel looser. More fluid.
But mobility isn’t just about the spine. It’s about the whole system working together. At Reform, we always look at the full picture — your posture, your movement patterns, your lifestyle. Because if you’re sitting at a desk for eight hours a day and your hips are locked up, or your thoracic spine — that’s the mid-back — is stiff from hunching forward, an adjustment is a great start, but we also want to give you the tools to keep that mobility going between visits.
Which brings me to the practical stuff — what you can actually do today.
One of the simplest things is to move more throughout the day. Not a full workout — just interrupting long periods of sitting with a few minutes of gentle movement. Stand up, walk around, roll your shoulders back. Your joints need motion to stay healthy. They actually get their nutrition through movement.
Also — pay attention to how you’re breathing. Shallow chest breathing, which a lot of us do when we’re stressed or sitting hunched over, can tighten the muscles around your ribcage and limit how well your thoracic spine moves. Taking some deep belly breaths throughout the day — more than you’d think — can actually make a real difference in how your mid-back feels.
And if you’re not sure where to start with stretching, that’s exactly the kind of thing we talk through with our patients at Reform. Because generic advice is okay, but what works for your body — that’s what produces lasting change.
Now, if you’ve been living with that nagging stiffness, or you’ve noticed your range of motion slowly decreasing over time, I really do encourage you to come in and get evaluated. Not because something is necessarily terribly wrong — but because the earlier we catch restricted movement, the easier it is to address. And honestly, people are always a little surprised by how much better they can feel once those joints are moving freely again.
At Reform Spine and Wellness, we take the time to understand your whole picture — not just where you hurt, but how you move, how you live, and what you want to get back to doing. That’s what root-cause care looks like. And that’s what you deserve.
