In this episode of the Reform Spine & Wellness podcast, Dr. Lisa Ly tackles one of the most common questions she hears in her San Diego practice: how to stay active and feel great after age 40. She explains that your body is fully capable of keeping up with an active lifestyle well into your fifties, sixties, and beyond—it simply requires a more thoughtful approach than it did in your younger years.
Dr. Ly breaks down the key shifts in how your body recovers, moves, and responds to exercise as you age, and what that means for your fitness routine. Listeners will walk away with practical strategies to train smarter, reduce injury risk, and build a sustainable, long-term relationship with movement.
Whether you’re a lifelong athlete or just getting started, this episode offers real answers and actionable advice to help you feel good in your body for the long haul.
Hey, welcome back. I’m Doctor Lisa Ly, and you’re listening to the Reform Spine and Wellness podcast — where we talk about real health, real answers, and how to actually feel good in your body for the long haul. Today we’re diving into something I get asked about constantly in our San Diego office. Staying active after forty. Because here’s the thing — your body absolutely can keep up with an active life past forty, fifty, sixty, and beyond. It just needs a little more intention than it did when you were twenty-two.
So let’s get into it.
Now, one of the most common things I hear from patients who come in around their forties is some version of this — “Doctor Ly, I used to run five days a week and now I’m sidelined after one jog.” Or “I picked up a bag of groceries and threw out my back.” Sound familiar? If it does, you are not alone, and more importantly — this is not just aging. This is your body telling you it needs a different strategy.
Here’s what’s happening. As we get into our forties and beyond, a few things shift. Recovery takes longer. Joints have more mileage on them. Muscle mass naturally starts to decrease if we’re not actively working against that. And the connective tissue — your tendons and ligaments — they become a little less elastic. That doesn’t mean you stop moving. It actually means the opposite. Movement becomes more essential than ever. But the way you move matters a whole lot more now.
Let me break this down into something practical. The first thing I always talk about with my patients is the importance of warming up like you actually mean it. Not a quick thirty second stretch and go. I’m talking five to ten minutes of gentle movement that gets blood flowing to your joints and wakes up your muscles before you ask them to perform. Think slow walking, arm circles, hip rotations — low intensity stuff that tells your body, hey, we’re about to do something. That simple shift alone prevents so many of the injuries I see walk through our door.
The second thing is this — strength training is your best friend after forty. I know not everyone loves the gym, and that’s okay. But building and maintaining muscle is one of the most protective things you can do for your spine, your hips, your knees — really your whole body. Even two days a week of resistance work makes a meaningful difference. It supports your joints, improves your balance, and honestly helps with energy levels too.
And the third piece — please, please respect your recovery. Sleep, rest days, hydration. These are not optional extras. They are part of the training. Your body repairs itself between sessions, not during them. Skipping recovery is like withdrawing from a bank account without ever making deposits. Eventually, something gives.
Now here’s where chiropractic care fits into all of this beautifully. Regular adjustments help keep your spine moving well — and when your spine is moving well, your whole body functions better. We also look at the full picture. Your posture, your movement patterns, what your daily life actually looks like. At Reform, we don’t just ask where it hurts. We want to understand why your body is struggling and what’s getting in the way of you living how you want to live.
If you’ve been pushing through pain, or you’ve been avoiding activity because you’re afraid of getting hurt — that’s exactly when I’d love to see you. You deserve a care plan that’s built around your goals, your life, your stage of life. Whether you’re a weekend hiker, a pickleball player, a parent chasing little ones around — there’s a version of healthy, active living that works for you. And we want to help you find it.
