Tune in for an honest, grounded conversation about one of the most powerful tools for your health: how you start your day.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Lisa Ly, and you’re listening to the Reform Spine and Wellness podcast — coming to you from right here in San Diego. Today we’re talking about something that can genuinely change the way you feel every single day. We’re talking about your morning routine.

Now, I know what you might be thinking. Oh no, not another wellness person telling me to wake up at five in the morning and meditate for an hour. That’s not what this is. I promise. What I want to talk about is something much more practical — small, intentional choices you can make in the first part of your day that actually support your spine, your nervous system, and your overall health. Because here’s the thing… how you start your morning sets the tone for everything that follows.

So let’s get into it.

The first thing I want you to think about is how you get out of bed. And I mean that literally. Most people wake up, and they just kind of… lurch forward. They sit straight up, twist, swing their legs over, and they’re off. But your spine has been in a resting position for the past seven or eight hours. The discs in your spine actually absorb fluid overnight, which means they’re a little more pressurized in the morning. This is actually why some people feel stiffer when they first wake up. So what’s the better move? Roll to your side first. Then use your arms to push yourself up. Give your body just a minute or two before you go full speed. It sounds simple, and it is — but it matters.

The second thing I want to talk about is movement. Now, this doesn’t have to be a full workout. I’m not asking you to do anything intense. But your body was designed to move, and spending the first chunk of your morning completely still — sitting, scrolling, hunched over a phone — that’s not a great start for your spine or your posture. Even just five to ten minutes of gentle movement can make a real difference. Some light stretching, a short walk outside, a few slow neck rolls, maybe some gentle movement for your lower back. Think of it as waking your body up alongside your mind.

Here’s what’s interesting — movement in the morning also helps with your nervous system. When you get your body moving early, you’re stimulating circulation, you’re improving your mood, and you’re actually helping your brain feel more alert without relying entirely on that first cup of coffee.

And the third piece I want to leave you with is hydration. Your body loses water overnight. A lot of people walk into their morning already mildly dehydrated and don’t even know it. Before the coffee, before the phone, try drinking a full glass of water first thing. It’s a simple habit that supports your joints, your muscles, and your energy levels throughout the day.

Now, if you’re someone who wakes up stiff every morning, or you’ve got nagging neck or back pain that just doesn’t seem to go away no matter what you try — that’s worth getting checked out. Sometimes there’s an underlying issue with your spine or your posture that’s making everything harder than it needs to be. At Reform Spine and Wellness, we look at the whole picture. We want to understand why your body is struggling, not just where it hurts. And honestly, a lot of people are surprised by how much better they feel once we address what’s actually going on at the root level.

So if you’re ready to stop just managing your symptoms and start actually feeling well — we’d love to connect with you. Our team is here in San Diego and we serve patients of all ages.
